This district is in the vicinity of the town of Mariposa at the southeast end of the Mother Lode gold belt. The Mariposa mine was reported to have been discovered in 1849 by Kit Carson, and the first stamp mill in California was installed there that same year. Geology - Gold Mines Desert Mining History Stamp Mill A stamp mill was a mechanical crusher, noisy, heavy and somewhat awkward to operate. The stamps were heavy metal weights that were lifted and dropped on the ore by a crankshaft. The crushed ore would then be further refined, usually by a mercury or cyanide process. The process explained:
The first stamp mill for crushing ore was built by Andrew Goss. Quartz mines, nearby, under crude methods, with wood for fuel, operated for years producing millions. Coulter built the first hotel and water for it was pumped from a well by two newfoundland dogs.
Gold was discovered on the slopes of Rand Mountain in 1895. From this discovery, the town of Randsburg (originally known as Rand Camp) sprang up almost overnight. By 1899, the town had over 3,500 residents. Randsburg boasted a 100-stamp mill and conservative estimates are that $60,000,000 in gold was taken out of the mines in the area during the town's boom years.

Oct 24, 2008 Gold was discovered in Georgia as early as 1828, the Colorado rush didn't begin until 1859. Some of the early mills may have made it there from the Appalachians, but for the most part, the new California mills would have begun to show up there, as they were much more efficient and tough than the older mills which broke easily because they were almost entirley made of wood.
Sep 25, 2017 Gold pans and sluice boxes were necessary tools for the placer miner, but they were of little use in the large mines. Gold veins were locked up in rock, and ores needed to be grinded up to separate out the gold. While there have been other crude tools used to grind ore over the centuries, it was the use of the stamp mill that changed everything.
